LOOKING FOR ALASKA – John Green (Honest Review)

A standalone novel.

Green - Looking for Alaska

Genre: Young Adult – Contemporary
Target Audience: 15+
C+ (64%)
Goodreads Rating: 3/5

Goodreads Description:
Miles Halter’s whole life has been one big non-event, until he meets Alaska Young.
Gorgeous, clever and undoubtedly screwed up, Alaska draws Miles into her reckless world and irrevocably steals his heart. For Miles, nothing can ever be the same again.

This wasn’t my first attempt at trying to read this novel. I didn’t enjoy it the first time I read it and stopped reading around the halfway mark. As I’m a huge fan of John Green, I knew I would come back to it. Did I enjoy it more than the first time? Yes. Did I love it? No. And here’s why.

John Green has built such a name for himself with his incredible novels including The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns. I absolutely love his writing and the depth that he has to his characters. With such a name now existing, he has a bar that he has to live up to, which can be a ton of pressure. For me, this book didn’t reach that bar.

The plot was good, really good actually. It’s not something I’ve seen before, not to mention I love a classic count-down. The way you know the impending doom is coming but you’re not quite sure what’s going to happening when it strikes zero. It’s always a fantastic feature to a story. I enjoyed the characters, they had depth to them, a mixture of who they are and what others see. It was fantastic. The characterisation is definitely something that makes the plot.

However, despite enjoying the idea of this concept, the plot didn’t actually work for me. I didn’t feel engaged and I didn’t relate. This is definitely on me, as I can  understand how others love this book. I wasn’t a fan of the mini scenarios either, I enjoy large scenes, not ones that are a page in length. Again, that’s just me.

I think the entire reason I didn’t like this novel is simply because it isn’t my cup of tea. I, personally , have never been the sort of person to fall into these groups of people. I’ve never been a huge fan of pranks or smoking and they’re large factors of the book.

I don’t know. I’m not so good at reviewing this one, sorry guys. To sum up my review, I get the hype but it ain’t my thang.

The break down of my rating:
Plot: 7/10
Characterisation: 8/10
Style & Tone: 7/10
Enjoyment Factor: 3/10
