LILY’S JUST FINE – Gill Stewart (Honest Review)

Genre: Young Adult – Contemporary
Target Audience: 13+
Rating: C+ (68%)
Goodreads Rating: 4/5

Lily couldn’t have planned life better herself. She lives in the best house in town and she’s dating the most popular boy in school. Everything else she can fix. Mum’s apathy? On it! The stuffy gala committee? Watch this space!
Tom has enough on his plate without trying to drag Newton St Cuthbert into the 21st Century. His sister is sick and there’s nothing anyone can do. Not doctors, not his parents, and certainly not Lily Hildebrand.
Sail away this summer with the unexpected romance of Scotland’s most determined teenager.

This book covers important topics like depression, anxiety, and irrational fears.

Here’s the thing, this one took me a little to get into. They sort of thrust right into all the drama straight away, and I know that can be a good thing for some books, just not really for this one. I felt as if I couldn’t get a proper grasp on the characters. They were telling me things but not really showing me anything, not until later on at least.

I found our main character, Lily, to be a little too much at first. I like that she’s so proactive and wants to help, but her forcefulness just makes me cringe. Maybe that’s a me thing, but it took me a little while to push past it.

I really liked all of the other characters, especially Tom’s sister (who I can’t remember the name of for the life of me). I don’t know why, not really, but she’s my favourite character out of the bunch. I guess it doesn’t matter because by the end, Lily had won over my heart as well.

If it wasn’t for Lily, I know there wouldn’t be much of a plot, but for what the plot was, I really enjoyed it. It was enjoyable, funny, and just one of those really good reads that you can fly through in one sitting. I definetly recommend picking this one up and giving it a go.

The break down of my rating:
Characterisation: 7/10
Style & Tone: 7/10
Enjoyment Factor: 7/10
