I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Bone Witch but as I’ve started reading the series and I own them all, I’m making sure that I finish them. The Heart Forger was a step up from the first in the series. Despite almost giving it the same star rating, it definitely was able to keep my attention for longer. The way the novel flicks from past to present (or is it present to future?) keeps throwing me off. I fall out of rhythm with the world and the story with the constant flip-flop back and forth. Unable to stay in the world for any longer than a chapter has my hands tied. I can’t find myself able to rate it any higher.
The Heart Forger tackles bigger issues and a more promising ending than The Bone Witch. It’s more exciting and heart-racing. It’s a story that I wouldn’t insist everyone to read but one that would suit a certain group of fantasy readers. That reader just isn’t me. (Keep an eye out for the review on book #3 when I get to reading it)
