WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI – Sandhya Menon (Honest Review)

Genre: Young Adult – Diverse Contemporary
Target Audience: 13+
B+ (88%)
Goodreads Rating: 4/5

Goodreads Description:
Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?
Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

This one started off slow for me, and I’m not sure why, but I had low expectations. I’ve heard great things about it, I really have but for some reason I carried the belief that this sucker wasn’t for me.

I WAS WRONG. This sucker was definitely for me!

Firstly, I love a story that takes place between high school and college, for some reason those ones usually peak my interest the most. What I love even more, is a summer school sort of vibe, and this definitely has that. It’s a freaking win-win sort of scenario over here! Woohoo! What did I do to deserve this?!

I love the culture that’s introduced in this novel. I admit that the majority of the shift in language that was mentioned through out this novel, I couldn’t interpret, but I guess I could get the general swing of things. The only thing that would have made it better would be if it gave a better understanding to what was being said.

Now. The characters. Rishi and Dimple are the cutest little potatoes ever. I love them both. Rishi is so cute and sweet and caring and lovable. I just want to smoosh his cheeks. Dimple is very realistic and guarded and strong. I adore her for her independence. All of the characters had a depth to them, with their backgrounds and who they are as people. (There were also characters I wanted to knee in the nuts, but that’s a personal issue, it isn’t actually a flaw in the book 😂.)

The plot. I loved it from start to finish. I love a good competition and I was pretty happy with the outcome of it. It made sense. All in all, this was a super cute book with super cute themes and a great introduction into the Indian culture. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and highly recommend this to anyone after a cute and quick read.

The break down of my rating:
Characterisation: 9/10
Style & Tone: 10/10
Enjoyment Factor: 8/10
