A Young Adult classic. READ IT! (And ignore the cover, they’re not very pretty.)
ONLY A TRUE BEST FRIEND CAN PROTECT YOU FROM YOUR IMMORTAL ENEMIES…
Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires—the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.
After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger…and the Strigoi are always close by.
Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…
I have to admit, this is a re-read, but my opinions are still going to be 100% honest. They’re just going to be taken from this time around.
I love this book and this series. I fell in love with it around the Twilight era, and have always adored this series more than that one. Vampire Academy is funny and action-packed, filled with romances that you want to run away with and just think about for hours on end. Richelle has this magical ability to create scenarios that are captivating and exciting. This book was, and still very much is, a huge favourite of mine.
I love the concept of the different vampires. I love that it’s not your typical high school story, but at the same time, it is. I love that the students and the teachers are the same at any other school, but the entire atmosphere is entirely different. I love how it jumps from the spine on page one. How it captivates your attention and refuses to let go. This book is amazing, and I can’t believe people aren’t still over the moon about this series?! What’s wrong with all of you?! IT WAS FABULOUS. (And the movie was awful – awful to the point of borderline insulting/hilarious).
The characterisation, the plot and the writing, was perfect. The characters never blended together, they were always unique and true to themselves. The development of these characters blossomed throughout the story, through every word. Through every tiny bit of information. The plot was accurate, cute and absolutely frustrating. This novel dives into friendships and relationships that are perfect. Exactly what one would wish for through any high school, and even grown-up experience. Richelle did an amazing job capturing the story and its very essence.
I have no faults with this book, and that might be because I knew what to expect. I knew when something was happening and when something wasn’t. I knew why and how and when. I knew I loved this story, I knew it would take me on an adventure, so I don’t know if there were moments it left you dangling on the edge of your seat. I don’t know if there were points you had to put it down to breathe, because I knew what was coming. I knew every little frustrating bit.
Regardless. I love this novel, I love this series and I bet my Goodreads rating is going to be a giant surprise.
Goodreads rating: 5/5 Stars. (<– Shock. Horror.)
